TL; DR you're getting a very nice plane that with a little work will most probably do at least almost as well as a plane double or more the price. The iron was sharp enough to shave my arm out of the box, which was a good start. The back didn't need a huge amount of lapping either, being reasonably flat out of the box too. It wasn't hard to lap or put a secondary bevel on the iron with a waterstome so hopefully it holds its edge well. If it doesn't though, at least it won't be hard to sharpen back up. It's thicker than a standard iron too, so possibly could be replaced with a Veritas iron if you wanted. They seem around the same thickness and width. The plane body has a nice weight to it and is pretty nicely finished. The sole did need a fair amount of lapping with a coarse grit, but not so much I'm annoyed. At worst the cup in the sole wasn't even 0.1 mm and that was only over a small area right in the centre. After about an hour total I had enough of a flat surface that the plane was perfectly serviceable. The adjustable mouth moves smoothly with no slop I could find, but I don't see myself needing to adjust the mouth much anyway. The Norris adjuster seems to work fine. It's a bit to get used to if you haven't used one before with the two parts, but that's the system and not the plane. There's a lateral adjustment lock via a grub screw that I imagine might be useful but really I don't think I'll be needing it. Nice to have though.A fair few reviews noted the brass screw holding the cap has no slot and is hard to loosen but also easy to strip when over-tightened. Yes, it's hard to loosen but I took around five minutes to add a slot with a hacksaw blade and now it's super easy to loosen with a slotted screwdriver. As to stripping it, that's on the user. I don't see how you'd need to crank it so hard you'd strip it with how the Norris adjuster works anyway.

It took some work since coming out of the box (I bought this a little over 1 year ago now) but with adjustments this has become an outstanding little plane! A few things I would recommend:- There's a lot of lateral play on either side of the iron which makes it hard to straighten (and keep straight). I drilled and tapped holes for some set screws on either side just inside the mouth to guide the iron. I saw it on a veritas once and this simple upgrade has made it much easier to use.- Soften the edges a bit. If I recall I got some scratches on some pieces by not doing this sooner.- The screw that tightens the cap gets unstable when extended as far as it needs to be to fasten the iron down. Others might not have this problem, but I found it was easily fixed by finger-tightening the screw that passes through the iron once the cap is in place. It's a lot more comfortable now.Otherwise- The iron was in good shape from the beginning and holds its edge very well, but adjust that to whatever angle or camber you see fit.- The sole was pretty flat and performed well before I decided to go flatten it further. Take a look though. I wouldn't be surprised to hear some were less flat...

I bought this Sweetheart LA block plane to replace the vintage Stanley LA block plane that I somehow misplace after moving. Initially, I was considering the Lee Valley low angle block plane but I could not justify paying the price for it, even though the LV LA block plane is of excellent build quality and a solid tool. I am pleased with the performance of this Stanley Sweetheart model. Mouth adjustment is easy, comfortable to hold in your hand and has a good solid feel to it with a heavy mass to help in cutting end grain. The heavier the plane, the easier it is to cut end grain. This block plane comes with an A2 blade and is very sharp. I'm glad I bought this block plane and is an excellent alternative to the LV LA block plane if you don't want to spend a lot of money. I highly recommend this Sweetheart plane from Stanley.
