I accidentally ripped the original sponge. This replacement sponge works just fine.

I don’t usually write reviews but I’m really not impressed by the condition that the replacement sponge and discs came in.

I just reviewed Vandoren's reeds and said they are the most consistent on the market today. Regrettably, I can't say the same for their reed holder. I live in the northeastern US where the winters can become fairly dry (say 35% indoor humidity) and without a good reed holder, reed warpage is a definite problem. I bought the Vandoren system, and wet the sponge as directed and within 2 weeks my reeds sprouted mildew. OK, I must have made the sponge too wet, so I cleaned the entire system with soap, water and Clorox, and learned that the material in the sponge doesn't like Clorox (turned an ugly brownish color). OK, so I ordered this little kit, after all I've just ruined 6 reeds and I didn't want to risk things using non-Vandoren parts - after all they (the folks at Vandoren) designed this system, so they MUST know what they're doing, right? Anyhow, I paid the crazy price to get the tiny sponge and two indicator disks. While waiting for these to arrive I cleaned and prepped my Vandoren reed holder. OK everything arrived, put it all together, took the next batch of reeds I was working on and put them into the new case with just a dab of water (boiled this time).Sure enough, two weeks later mildew and 6 more reeds down in the trash can.So, as a reed holder this system works, after all it does hold 6 reeds. However if you use the sponge, the reeds grow mildew, if you don't they'll warp. But it holds them just fine.Really, there must be a better system out there (and it's not the pretty Selmer either, reeds warp in that too!).
