I brought this original album as I thought the remastered version which has more tracks cut the songs too short. Martika is best known for the song 'Toy Soldiers which is a powerful anti-drug song based on a friend battling an addiction which has been sampled by rap star Eminem and TV's 'The Simpsons'. The songs chorus is sung by the child actors from the TV series 'Kids Incorporated' one of whom is Stacey Ann Ferguson who is now a singer in the band 'The Black-Eyed Peas'. Another of my favourite tracks on this album is 'Water' as it has an atmospheric feel to it as it uses water sound effects, and the chorus is repeated in Spanish demonstrating her bilingual language skills {She is also fluent in Japanese but not spoken on this album}. All the songs are love/relationship based and the first track 'If you're Tarzan, I'm Jane' being about chasing a guy to prove her love which has a lot of tempo followed by ' Cross my Heart ' which is a take on religion with the lyrics ' May lightning strike me if I am telling a lie'. Her cover of ' I feel the earth move' by Carol King is fast and punchy with an electronic beat. The final song ' Alibis' giving her lover an ultimatum. Martikas music is often viewed as the same as Madonna but although there are similarities ,The only things that Martika and Madonna have in common is that they were both born in California and follow the Catholic religion. Martika has led an interesting life in music and Screen, She started her pop career in the early 1980's with 'We are music' by Martika and the we Ares which was exclusively released in Japan, .Since then she released her first self titled album in 1989 and a second album ' Martika's Kitchen in 1991 which she co-wrote with Prince but was not as successful. She appeared in the short lived American TV cop show 'Wise guy' as a singer and has bit parts in other American tv shows and written songs for other pop artists such as Alisha and for movies such as 'Arachnophobia . She made four aborted attempts to restart her pop career in 2004 with a third album 'Mirror ball' which has never been fully released. In recent years she and her husband Michael set up a band called Operra and have released two albums. I listen to this album a lot and when I have played it in the shop were I work some customers gasp and say 'I have not heard that for years!'. { 2019 marks Martika's 50th Birthday}
